I just heard that we no longer need to have an NTT line to get IP phone or internet access, is this true? It would be nice not to have to pay NTT their monthly fee if we didn't have to.

Thanks for the help.

Hello:

Yes, it is true, but you won't be saving a huge amount of money. All ADSL services use NTT wires and NTT is going to get paid for the use of the lines one way or the other.

If you use Yahoo! BB without NTT phone service, Yahoo! BB charges you about Y1,660 extra per month and then passes it on to NTT. As NTT residential phone service costs vary from Y1523 to Y2047 per month (depending on the area and type of service), the amount you pay will also vary from a little less to a little more to use YBB without NTT.

If you are using YBB with NTT phone service now and want cancel your phone service and get YBB without the phone service, you can do that but you will be without internet service for at least two weeks during the changeover. And that's if you do it right and there are no complications.

If you do not have internet now and want to get connected, then you should start by finding out what is available. Nearly half of the apartment buildings in Japan already have Hikari (fiber optic) service connected to the building. If that's the case, you probably will want that instead because it will usually be cheaper, faster and quicker to connect.

To find out if your building has Hikari already installed and get detailed info on available services, you should request an Availability Report.
